Book Donations June 2014 Update

June 7, 2014

We have completed the first phase of our FirstBook Denver book donation program. We have raised,

  • $232.89 in cash donations
  • $1038.21 in book donations to local charities such as Goodwill and the Vietnam Veterans of America.

We are going to keep the book donation program going so keep us in mind. Books already donated will continue to sell over time and add to our cash donations to FirstBook.  Thanks and let me know if you have any questions!

April and May are the slowest time of the year for book sales typically so as we wind down the first phase of our giving campaign to First Book, the cash donations will be a bit lower but still gratefully accepted by First Book. I will report our full donations so far in June and the program will continue since we received some many book donations.  Books given before the May 31st deadline will still add to our First Book contribution moving forward and we will still be accepting book donations.

However, I wanted your feedback about a new thing I heard about on NPR last month that might be a good program to support.

Young Iraqi hopes books will stop his peers from migrating (NPR)

Bathed in the rainbow-colored light of an old Baghdadi window, Ali al-Makhzomy explained his plan to get technology-obsessed young Iraqis to read books — old-fashioned books, with pages.

Outside the cafe where he sat, concrete blocks protect businesses from car bombs. Eleven years after the toppling of Saddam Hussein, young people who despair of a future in Iraq are still trying to emigrate. Many of those who remain hope that their country will someday emerge as a new version of ultra-modern, oil-rich Dubai. –  Read the full post on NPR’s website

Do you think this might be a worthy project to investigate and see that we could support? Either way we will continue to donate to First Book Denver but I am open to any new ideas of good programs to support, if you got em.

Connect with Ali on Twitter or Facebook.

As always here is the copy of our latest payment.

Thanks, Matt

First Book - March 2014

April 21, 2014

February and March were good months and we raised over $95.82 for First Book Denver in February and over 200.00 in March and April. We are in the process of cutting that check.

Our Denver book donation campaign for First Book ends May 31st so if you have some books you don’t need anymore let em circulate and help support early reading programs here in Colorado.

So last year you helped us give away $240.70 in book donations and cash contributions. So thank you! The November- December contribution to First Book is below. We actually decided to donate off our total sales, not just book donations since this campaign is going so well and First Book is such a fun organization to work with.  Check out our book donation page to find out how to donate your books.

First book nov and dec

Hi book lovers. I wanted to update you on book donations. We just cut our November check. Thank you so much for the donations. Emily did a great job recruiting donors. Keep em coming. We have been a little slow lately so if you know someone whose moving that is a great time to recycle some books.

November 2013 Donation to First Book

My book drive to support literacy charity First Book wrote it’s first check in October!

October donation first book

October 2013 Donation to First Book

This will only grow as we now have 50+ books on Amazon and eBay. In addition to the cash donation we also donated over a hundred books to the Assistance League of Denver and Goodwill.  We’ve had several hundred books donated but we need more. While I may keep one or two temporarily if I can’t bear to not read it, all books are donated to thrift shops connected with non-profits or sold online.

Selling online is the important part to me because we are generating cash for charities which is even more important then giving them books to sell as I have talk about on the main page for our book drive. Emily is also helping in Chicago and she already has collected more books then me! This can’t stand Denver! Let’s outgive the City with the big Shoulders!

I’ll have a flyer from Christina at First Book Denver to post soon. It would be great if you could print it out and post it in your favorite neighborhood gathering. But keep the books coming! You can call me at 720-840-0291 to arrange a free book pickup or contact us through the site.   Thanks
